Evelyn Ford Crayton Student Leadership and Community Engagement Award

About Dr. Evelyn Ford Crayton RDN, LDN, FAND

Dr. Crayton is the director and nutrition consultant at Living Well Associates and a Professor Emerita at Auburn University, Alabama where she worked for more than 35 years. Previously, she was a home economist at Tuskegee (Institute) University, Alabama and a therapeutic dietitian at hospitals in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a Director at Large in the House of Delegates and on the Academy’s Board for two years; and was an At-Large member of the Board for three years. A member of the Academy Foundation’s Board of Directors, she served as chair of the Nutrition Education for the Public dietetic practice group and is a past president of the Alabama Dietetic Association, holding offices at all levels of the district association. Dr. Crayton is a member of the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPG and the National Organization of Blacks in Dietetics member interest group. Her area of expertise is nutrition education for the public. She is a philanthropist and an advocate for community improvement.

Dr. Crayton served for three years on Auburn University’s Diversity Leadership Council and is a three-time recipient of the March of Dimes’ Hero Award. She is a graduate of Grambling State University, Louisiana and earned a master’s degree from St. Louis University, Missouri and a doctorate from Auburn University, Alabama. She is married to her college sweetheart and they have three adult children

Description of Award

In honour of Evelyn Crayton’s long-standing commitment and outstanding contributions to the dietetics and nutrition profession, this award seeks to recognize a student who has demonstrated capacity and/or potential for leadership in their communities. Here, a student leader is defined as one who does not have to be elected as a leader, but is someone who has seen a need in his or her community and sought to meet that need by solving problems, i.e. developing a community garden, assisting people in gaining access to food systems or social programs, providing or gaining access to transportation as needed, to name a few.

The successful student will receive $500 CAD and a complimentary conference registration


This award recognizes a student who is enrolled in their first or second year of a post-secondary nutrition or dietetics program that is offered at any degree-granting post-secondary institution. The recipient should be a member of an underserved population and/or a group that is underrepresented in nutrition and dietetics due to social or economic barriers, which may include, but is not limited to:

  • Being an international student, a newcomer, or a first generation member of a newcomer family
  • Being a member of an Indigenous/Aboriginal group
  • Being a member of a racialized group; Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)
  • Being of a family that, or they themselves, has/have lived or is living with incarceration, addictions, or other mental health concerns
  • Having or being a caregiver for a person with a physical or intellectual disability
  • Being of a family, or they themselves, are low-income, live in poverty, or are supported by social assistance and/or student loans

    The successful student may self-nominate, or be nominated by a peer, supervisor, or mentor. Although scholastic achievement is worthy of recognition, the selection process for this award does not prioritize grades/GPA.
